The
quick answer to the question, "How do we get the science into science fiction?"
is "Very Carefully!"
Getting ideas
for science fiction stories is not difficult. We
can get ideas for science fiction just like ideas in any other genre.
Personal experiences
can be sources of stories - of any type. We
all like to talk about ourselves, what we've done, what we would like
to have done, or would like to do. Take any story and set in in
the future or onto another world and you turn it into a soft science fiction
story. Making the story dependent on some as yet unknown scientific
discovery or technology could turn it into hard science fiction. We've already
seen that "House M.D." isn't considered science fiction. But
take any of those shows and plunk it down onto Beverly Crusher's part
of the USS Enterprise and it's now science fiction.
