"Everyone" knows that, according to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, nothing can exceed the speed of light. So how did FTL (faster-than-light) travel become the way to go for star ships like those in "Star Wars"? FTL travel is based on the fact that we don't know it all yet. Perhaps someday there will be ways discovered so that star ships can travel faster than light. These plausible explanations to get around Einstein's speed limit include hyperspace, warping space, and travel through worm holes. But even though these have been used so much as to be almost cliches, it wouldn't hurt the new science fiction writer to do some research to make sure that the method he/she uses is consistent with the story being written. Once again, it's easy to get science into science fiction, but you need to do it very carefully. |
