A good science fiction story has several characteristics:

1. It's a good story.

The story must grab the reader's interest, keep the reader interested and participating, and not disappoint him/her at the end.  In other words, it must have the characteristics expected of any other type of story.

2. The characters must be believable, interesting, and realistic.

Just like in any other type of story - even if the characters are aliens.
