4.
People reading science fiction will come to the story with certain knowledge
and expectations - or lack thereof - dependent on their past experience
with reading science fiction.
Readers and writers new to science fiction need to realize that
there is a jargon which A) readers are expected to already know: words and
concepts like "hyperspace," "psionics," "teleporation," "robotics,"
etc., or B) readers are willing to try to understand from context. This can make
it difficult for readers new to science fiction; it should not make it
difficult for the writer. The writer should not feel compelled to
educate the reader with regard to the standard jargon of science fiction.
This is not done in any other genre, and it should not be done in science
fiction.
