There are a number of things which a student should learn while writing a science fiction story -

1. Learning science can be fun.

When I was very young, one of the fun things about reading (and writing) science fiction was "The Game."  To play The Game, The Writer wrote a science fiction story, then The Reader tried to find out where errors in science had been made.

Learning science in order to play The Game was much more fun than it was when learning it just so you could balance some equations in Chemistry or to solve pulley problems in Physics.
