Many more types of science fiction become evident when we look at the premise of the story.  Some of these types of science fiction include -

     time travel

     space travel

     space operas (an old-time name for stories about Cowboys in Space Suits - as illustrated by the "Cowboys and Indians" sort of story illustrated at the right)

     alien contact (again, illustrated at the right)

     alternate history

     alternative universes

     apocalypse/post-apocalypse

     military (war in space or on other worlds)

     the future

     What if...? (What are the consequences of some specific scientific discovery or technological development?)

As you can see, there are enough types of science fiction stories to provide a lot of choices for any prospective writer.
