Preliminary Design

My first two Z scale layouts, Circus and Happy Birthday, were briefcase layouts.  This layout will be a bit larger. I bought a 24 x 20 x 8 inch Samsonite suitcase on eBay. The inside dimensions are approximately 25 inches wide by 19 inches across (at the center) or 18 inches across the ends.  Apparently the suitcase is a bit longer than the 24 inches specified .

After the suitcase arrived I removed the straps, pockets, and flaps used to hold clothes in place.

I taped four sheets of printer paper together to simulate my suitcase for use with the Marklin "Track Planning Game" and have been experimenting with the half-sized track to see what I could come up with that would be different than just the single loop found in my Circus and Happy Birthday layouts.

At the moment I am considering having two separate loops - a small ground-level loop and a larger elevated loop which passes over the ends of the smaller loop via bridges.  The larger loop would be supported by an elevated plateau at each end (as opposed to just the piers shown in the picture below of my preliminary plan.)

I've ordered track, foam sheeting, bridges, asphalt roadway, tunnel openings, and some cattle. While waiting, I'm assembling some of the kits which I've bought.
