One problem with
the kit involved the roof. After the edges were turned up, the roof was
to be set down inside the walls of the station. It was a little too large.
I don't know if this was a problem with the kit design or because there
must be a little leeway in how the edges bend at the score lines. Pressing
the roof into position loosened one corner of the building where it had
been glued. I reglued the corner, filled the gap with a little Foam
Putty, and repainted the corner. The same problem occurred with the addition
of the roof of the tower.
The pump island
was designed to have a roof supported by two posts. The illustration
of the finished station in the package did not show the roof, and I decided
to omit it. This left two holes in the base of the island. I filled the
bottom of the island with Foam Putty. This filled in the holes, and provided
a larger surface for gluing the pump island into its final position. The directions
suggested making a base for the station with a sheet of styrene - supposedly
available at hobby shops. The kit came with a sheet of cardboard to stiffen
the plastic bag that held the contents. I cut a 9 x 10 cm section of
this cardboard, scored the surface with the back side of my X-Acto knife
to create an 8 mm (six Z scale feet) wide sidewalk, and painted it with
gray acrylic. I poked a hole though the cardboard near one corner with
a pin for placing the station's Gulf sign.
