Gulf Gas Station Kit # 930

The Gulf Gas Station in Z scale consists of a photo-etched brass gas station in the 5.75x5.25-inch sheet.  There is also a sheet of clear plastic for window glazing and two sheets of water-slide decals. One sheet of decals is for a generic gas station, the other for a Gulf station.

I tried painting most of the

pieces with enamel paints prior to assembly, as shown in the image shown to the right.

One problem with the kit involved the roof. After the edges were turned up, the roof was to be set down inside the walls of the station. It was a little too large. I don't know if this was a problem with the kit design or because there must be a little leeway in how the edges bend at the score lines. Pressing the roof into position loosened one corner of the building where it had been glued. I reglued the corner, filled the gap with a little Foam Putty, and repainted the corner. The same problem occurred with the addition of the roof of the tower.

The pump island was designed to have a roof supported by two posts. The illustration of the finished station in the package did not show the roof, and I decided to omit it. This left two holes in the base of the island. I filled the bottom of the island with Foam Putty. This filled in the holes, and provided a larger surface for gluing the pump island into its final position.

The directions suggested making a base for the station with a sheet of styrene - supposedly available at hobby shops. The kit came with a sheet of cardboard to stiffen the plastic bag that held the contents. I cut a 9 x 10 cm section of this cardboard, scored the surface with the back side of my X-Acto knife to create an 8 mm (six Z scale feet) wide sidewalk, and painted it with gray acrylic. I poked a hole though the cardboard near one corner with a pin for placing the station's Gulf sign.

I used some of the water-slide decals on the station when I finished assembly of the building. I tried to protect the decals with a coat of HobbyCal Flat Clear Lacquer Finish. I ruined one decal while brushing on the clear lacquer and learned that even commercial decals must be brushed VERY lightly when applying the lacquer.
